M is for

MERCURY
One of the major post-war labels, made in the US by Mercury Record Corp. In the UK, masters were licensed to Oriole, which in the mid 50s introduced its own Mercury label - this later passed to EMI, then to Philips, from whence it was absorbed into the Polygram group - much more to come

Iconic label founded by Berry Gordy in Detroit (Mo-Town): In the UK all releases from Motown (including those issued on Tamla and Gordy in the USA) appeared on the EMI label Tamla-Motown
